OpenAI's Projects documentation describes projects as places for chats, files, and custom instructions with built-in memory. Project-only memory can restrict context to conversations and material inside that project, while other memory behavior depends on account and workspace settings.
Choose ChatGPT Projects when the work naturally happens through a continuing set of ChatGPT conversations and built-in tools. It is suitable for drafting, analysis, research, and recurring work where project chat history contributes useful context.
Review the memory setting. A project that should remain isolated from general personal context should use the appropriate project-only option when available.
Claude Projects
Anthropic describes Claude Projects as self-contained workspaces with chat histories, project instructions, and knowledge bases. Uploaded documents, text, code, and other files provide context for chats.
Anthropic also documents automatic RAG for Projects when project knowledge grows near the context limit. Retrieval selects relevant information rather than loading the complete knowledge base into every interaction.
Choose Claude Projects when Claude is the main reasoning and writing surface and the project knowledge can be maintained through uploaded material and project instructions.
NotebookLM
Google's NotebookLM overview emphasizes source-grounded chat with inline citations and outputs such as briefings, audio and video overviews, mind maps, and study aids.
Choose NotebookLM when understanding, comparing, and transforming the selected sources is the central job. It is particularly useful when the notebook itself is the research environment rather than one phase in a larger agent workflow.
The portability question
Each product provides continuity within its own environment. If the same research must also support a coding agent, a different writing assistant, or another compatible client, consider keeping the source collection in an external project memory.
MCP provides a standard way for compatible hosts to connect to focused resources and tools. A service such as SauceTab MCP can expose the same project research to several clients, while ChatGPT Projects, Claude Projects, or NotebookLM remain the interface used for a particular task.
This does not make the external memory automatically better. It adds portability and requires another access boundary to manage.
Which should you choose?
Choose ChatGPT Projects when conversation continuity and ChatGPT's integrated tools are the priority.
Choose Claude Projects when a Claude-centered knowledge workspace and retrieval over uploaded project content fit the task.
Choose NotebookLM when source-grounded exploration and generated research formats are the desired destination.
Choose an external project memory when the source collection should outlive any one client and remain reusable across compatible AI tools.
Test the same project in two candidates. Upload or connect the same source set, ask comparative questions, inspect citations, and try to continue the work in another tool. The best choice is the one that matches where the project actually lives.
